Parents everywhere are rejoicing over the fact that the new school year is about to begin! Don’t get too excited yet, moms and dads; you still have a few responsibilities. Packing your child’s lunch with foods that are both healthy, and that kids will enjoy eating is no easy task. Here are a few back to school ideas for your child’s lunchbox:
1. Sweet Potato Fries
These are basically a healthy alternative to a kid-favorite snack food. Whether you find healthy ones in the store to prepare, or you decide to make your own from scratch, this will be a unique snack that will be a great addition to the lunchbox.
2. Fresh Fruit
There are so many great options when it comes to adding fresh fruit to your child’s lunchbox. The great part about most fruit is that they are sweet, which increases the odds that your kid will actually eat them. Bananas, grapes, blueberries, raspberries, apple slices, and sliced melons are all delicious choices.
3. Veggies and Dip
Now we all know it can be a little difficult to get our kids to eat vegetables, but there are some ways around this issue. It’s amazing how much a yummy dip or topping can change a child’s mind about how much they enjoy a certain vegetable. Sour cream and onion dip, peanut butter, and hummus are all good options to use for a variety of different vegetables.
If you find some free time during the week, baking some homemade muffins will turn into the perfect lunchbox snack. Rather than grabbing some muffins from the grocery store that are filled with sugar, you can make your own and control exactly what ingredients are used. This is another great way to get your child to eat fruit as well!
5. Trail Mix
Although buying pre-made trail mix from the store is the easiest option, you can create your own too. Most kids love trail mix because of the variety of snacks: pretzels, nuts, raisins, chocolate, etc. Throw it in a sandwich bag and it’s ready to be packed into your kid’s lunch within seconds.
Jerky is another lunchbox idea that your kid will love. The only catch with this snack is finding the healthy ones in the store. Keep an eye out for healthy, natural brands that are free of MSG, chemicals and additives.
7. Coconut Water
Your children need a drink too! Coconut water is not only a healthy drink choice, but it also tastes great. The bonus of this drink is that it’s just sweet enough to keep your child from turning to other sugary drinks and juices.
