7 Simple Tips for Fresher Laundry

Nobody wants to smell like yesterday’s sweaty sock, or like they’ve just done several hours i the gym, when actually, they’ve just put on fresh clothes, but so often our laundry does not come out of the washer smelling as fresh as it should. It’s time to change that with seven simple tips to get your wahsing smelling great, no matter what.
- Face the Funky Truth
If your washing machine smells bad, it’s not going to politely keep that stench to itself. Nope, it’s going to share the misery with every garment you toss in. Say goodbye to the funky machine by running a hot cycle with white vinegar and baking soda. After that, leave the door open so it can air out—think of it like giving your washer a chance to meditate and find its inner peace.
- Sort, Don’t Just Shove
We’ve all been guilty of that “one giant heap” approach to laundry. But mixing grimy gym socks with your delicate blouses is just asking for trouble. Sort by color, fabric type, and level of dirtiness. Trust me, your favorite T-shirt doesn’t want to hang out with that muddy pair of jeans that just conquered a nature trail.
- Stop Hoarding Dirty Clothes
Look, I get it: laundry is about as thrilling as watching paint dry. But letting dirty clothes pile up is like inviting odors to set up camp and roast marshmallows. The longer you wait, the harder it is to banish the stink. Consider doing smaller, more frequent loads—less time spent laundering at once, and no chance for stench to become a permanent resident.
- Timing Is Everything
Leaving wet clothes in the washing machine overnight because Netflix seduced you with a new series? Big mistake. The only thing that grows in that dark, damp environment is mildew (and maybe a sense of shame when you open the lid the next morning). Finish what you start and move that laundry to the dryer ASAP. Your future self will thank you.
- Get Picky with Products
Just because that detergent has a supermodel on the bottle doesn’t mean it’s the hero your laundry needs. Experiment with different detergents, fabric softeners, and odor-neutralizing boosters until you find The One. Maybe even toss in a scented dryer sheet or those fancy wool dryer balls. Your clothes deserve a bit of TLC.
- Embrace Line-Drying (When Possible)
Remember when Grandma used to hang sheets outside and they smelled like a meadow on a summer’s day? She knew what was up. If the weather’s friendly, hang your clothes outside. Sunlight and fresh air can work magic, making your laundry smell like it frolicked in a field instead of huddling in a dark dryer.
- Take a Whiff Before Storing
Before you fold and put everything away, do a quick sniff test. If something still smells a bit off, don’t just hide it in a drawer and hope for the best. Rewash it. Better to tackle the problem now than rediscover it when you’re already late for that important meeting.
In the end, it’s worth the effort!
