This takes advantage of younger infants being in a light, drowsy sleep state where they will reflexively take a bottle or breast when offered.

 

The ideal timing for a dream feed is your own bedtime (between 10pm to midnight is ideal), even if a baby isn't yet showing hunger signs. Feeding them then can essentially "top them up", helping them sleep longer stretches until morning and helping ensure that their longest stretch of sleep aligns with when you’re also sleeping. 

The Approach Of Dream Feeding

When approaching a dream feed, keep things calm and quiet - dim the lights, avoid stimulation, and be gentle in your movements. Speak softly and avoid too much stimulation to prevent fully rousing the baby. 

 

With bottle feeding, tease the nipple along the baby's lips and cheek until they instinctively latch on and start sucking in their sleepy state. With breastfeeding, the same gentle approach works - lightly tickle near the lips until the baby opens their mouth and begins nursing. Stay until the baby has drained enough, then after they detach or doze back off quietly place them back down and creep away.  

Consistency And Routines Are The Key 

While success doesn't happen overnight, dream feeding does work for most babies. The key is consistency to make it a predictable baby sleep routine. Choose your timing and feed amounts and stick it out for at least 2 weeks to gauge effectiveness. 

 

Slowly baby learns through repeated exposure that a dream feed reliably comes around the same time each night. Their little bodies adapt by taking larger feeds and not waking as frequently after this feed.   

Overcoming Challenges Of Dream Feeding

The first few dream feeds may have rocky moments as you refine the technique and find the ideal timing and intake volume. Pay close attention each night to see how long feeds sustain the baby until morning wake. Adjust the timing a little later or increase the feed volume to see if this helps them have a longer sleep stretch.

 

Some babies may fully wake up and resist going back down during the feed. Stay calm and stick to quiet rocking and soothing verbal cues until they finish drinking. Others might start strong then conk out after an ounce or two - try keeping them engaged with feeding by lightly stroking their hair or cheeks so that they still take a decent feed.

 

When a dream feed is working a baby will sleep at least another 4 hours after the feed or ideally sleep through until their morning feed. If you find your baby is still waking for their usual feed times overnight in addition to the dream feed, then it’s probably not working for your baby and you might as well just drop the dream feed letting them naturally wake for their first feed. 

 

The Benefits Of Dream Feeding For Parents

 

Rather than both parents taking turns with night wakings, dream feeds allow dividing workload. One parent handles the dream feed while the other secures that precious nighttime sleep block for mental and physical recovery. Switch duties every few days so you both recharge.

 

For breastfeeding moms, having a dad or partner manage the daily dream feed with pumped milk or formula lets you sleep. You still handle other night wakings for nursing but this allows you to get at least one long stretch of undisturbed sleep.

 

The Gradual Progression Toward Sleeping Through The Night  

In those early days, dream feeding might buy you an extra 4-5 hours of rest. But with time,some babies reliably start sleeping 8 hours by 5-6 months once the fixed routine is established. Over time as solids are introduced, babies need fewer night calories as they learn to eat more during daytime awake windows.

 

Eventually, dream feeds are phased out as babies begin naturally sleeping longer and longer without needing the "top up". Feeds are slowly pushed later and later until baby decides they don't need nighttime calories. While the first year brings many fluctuations in sleep, by 6-8 months many babies can officially sleep a full 12 hours straight.
