Tourists: Things You Should not do in Florence

Florence is universally known as one of the most amazing cities in the world, filled with art, fabulous cuisine and amazing architecture. With the abundance of treasures in the city center, you need to know what to avoid in Florence as much as you need to know what you should be visiting when you get there. As a tourist, there are plenty of rules and etiquette to play by, but as long as you play by those rules, you're going to have the most amazing holiday. With that in mind, here is a list of things that you should not be doing when you arrive in Florence.

  1. Don't drag your luggage around with you. If you're going to spend time in Florence, the last thing you want to be doing is dragging heavy luggage around with you. From attraction to attraction, museum to museum. Instead, you need to find the best luggage storage Florence has to offer, and you need to store your belongings while you go and sightsee hands free. Not only will you not have to worry about bumping your luggage through cobbled streets, but you also get the chance to enjoy yourself rather than having to worry about your things being stolen wherever you go.
  2. Don't stick to the typical tourist things. As you may already know, Florence is a small and walking city. This means that you can visit Florence in a day and pepper your vacation in Italy with lots of different places. However, if you are sticking to the typical touristy things such as walking in a tourism group, it's not a good idea for Florence because Florence is so small. You need to be able to get yourself a map, walk on your own and get a little bit lost.In all honesty, you're never really going to be truly lost in Florence, because you'll always find your way back again.
  3. Don't hire a car. As we just said, Florence is a walking city, which means that parking is expensive, the streets are very narrow, and trying to find places in a car is going to be more frustrating than anything else. As historic as Florence is, it's quite behind the times when it comes to the parking situation, so you need to make sure that you forget the car and walk. Don't just wear sandals for the day though, because you're going to end up in quite a bit of pain.
  4. Don't wear heels. We just talked about the fact that you shouldn't wear sandals for a day in a walking city because you need more support when you are walking around. You should also avoid wearing high heels. You can always buy the beautiful Italian high heeled shoes from some of the best designers, but the cobblestone sidewalks of Florence are not the challenge you want to overcome in a pair of heels. You have to remember that you are visiting a city that is built with art and history in mind so it's not going to be kind to your legs or your feet if you tried to wear the wrong shoes.
  5. Don't forget to meet The David. The most famous of the David statues in Florence is in front of Palazzo Vecchio. The original statue is situated at the Accademia Gallery, but nothing compares to seeing Michelangelo's marble masterpiece in person. You should arrange for tickets online to skip the queue and be able to get up close and personal with the David in Florence. It's always worth a visit and giving yourself plenty of time for some reverence of the history that you are going to be standing in front of.

  1. Don't forget to learn some manners. It's very easy to mistake Italian for Spanish, but you'd be very wrong to think that you can use Spanish in Italy. Learning some of the manners that you'd need day-to-day while you are in Italy is important. You wouldn't use gracias or por favor in Italy. You use grazie or per favore. Remember you're not in Sevilla or Madrid, you're in Florence.
  2. Don't bother with the queues. When you're in Florence, you should always book things ahead. Florence is such a historical city that it's one of the most popular tourist destinations, but avoid queuing up for any attractions by booking tickets online.Tourists in Florence will spend a lot of time in queues if they're not booking ahead. Be smart, look ahead, and once you're in Florence, you'll be able to bypass all of those queues. Nobody wants to spend all of their trip in line, right?
  3. Don't forget to visit Central Market. The biggest food market is the place to be if you want to buy something authentic for your dinner that night. Central Market can be found in San Lorenzo and has been renewed with restaurants and bars and is the perfect shopping place for Tuscan gastronomy.
  4. Don't stick to the tourist spots for dinner. Tourist restaurants have a time and a place, but if you want to wander down those narrow streets you'll find tiny tidal tidied away cafes and wine bars that are frequented by the locals. These are where you want to go. Just make sure that you brush up on your Italian before you get there so that you can order your food, which is going to be better and more budget friendly than the tourist options.
  5. Don't drink a cappuccino with your dinner. Did you know that Italians won't drink cappuccinos at lunch or dinner time? Ordering a cappuccino either of those meals is going to cause a commotion with the waiters, so make sure that you are ordering a mineral water or an Italian wine instead. Cappuccino is excellent, but it's only for breakfast, so make sure that you are cleared up on your Italian etiquette before you travel.

Your trip to Florence should be a good one, especially if you follow these don'ts above.
